About us – Ooty Hidden Valley Jungle Camp

The virgin private forest is located 20 KM from Ooty. There are five beautiful views points overlooking the moyar Gorge and Karnataka forest. The animals found at Mudumalai are available in this area, Bison, Sambhar, Mouse deer, Barking deer, Panther, Bear, Elephants, Python etc.,

The guest house is located in an old English era Bungalow with three bed rooms. No electricity, solar lamps/kerosene lamps are provided.

The package per head is provided with 2 lunch, one dinner and one breakfast, evening tea. The charges per head includes food, trekking, guide fee, bonfire etc.,

The property consists of 150 acres of valleys and hills overlooking the Sigur plateau. It is located on the foothills of the Nilgiri mountains as they descend onto the Sigur plateau. One can see the villages of Valithotham, Anaikatty and even Masinagudi from the edge of the property. Also visible in the distance is the Moyar gorge that divides Mudumalai and Bandipur forests.

The bungalow itself is nestled in a wooded valley that is fed by tiny mountain streams. One of these streams is the perennial source of ‘mineral water’ for the bungalow.

The property is contiguous with the forest that almost surrounds it so needless to say there is plenty of animal movement within. In the vicinity of the bungalow we have a few wild regulars including a Malabar Whistling Thrush who frequently sets camp and sings his random tunes, a Nilgiri Marten (relatively rare and endemic animal) who comes nights to feed at the fig tree near the dining area, and one or two Malabar Giant Squirrels.

Ecology
Moist deciduous to evergreen, rainfall almost throughout the year, usually in short spells. Many endemic Nilgiri wildlife found including – Nilgiri langur, Nilgiri Marten and several Nilgiri birds.

Best time to visit
We say all round the year
Each season begs us to discover a whole new range of flora and fauna in Nilgiris.

Summers
All though wildlife sightings are a matter of luck, summers are the best time to spot wildlife. Trek to vantage point to watch Sambar deer, Bison, Elephants, Bears and those elusive cats using salt licks, water holes or tree shades to beat the heat. These treks will be hard and tiring but worth all of that.

Monsoons
It is the heavenly time to discover the flora and fauna of Nilgiris. We receive rains both during south west monsoon and North East monsoon and walk through the slushy tracks to get the glimpse of life in tropical forests. Mind you leeches are part of the game.

Winters
Bring out your Binocs, DSLR’s out. October to January is the mating season for most of the birds and jungle will be hustling with lot of activity. We can reach to a water hole and spend hour’s together listen to Malabar Whistling Thrush (Irish School Boy) singing aimlessly throughout the day. You must try our Tree Walks with our in-house biologists and Bird walks with our Ornithologists to understand more about richness of NIligiri Bio Sphere reserve.
